Build the route before the paperwork

List each border crossing and the flight or road route into it. Check the destination authority’s visa rules for the passport and purpose; do not assume a regional itinerary shares one permission. For overland travel, verify that the particular border and visa product support the proposed entry.

Read destination and regional warnings

Use each country’s current Smartraveller page, including its regional map and latest update. Subscribe to relevant advice. A tourism itinerary, a lower overall level or an operator’s recommendation does not remove warnings for a particular district or transport route.

Take the complete itinerary to a clinician

Discuss destinations, transit history, season, accommodation, activities, medical history and existing vaccinations. Yellow fever certificate requirements can depend on where you have arrived from or transited, while malaria prevention requires an individual assessment. Do not select medication or skip a vaccine from a continent-wide list. Check current outbreak and border-health notices close to travel.

Ask practical questions of the operator and insurer

• What transport and communication arrangements are actually included?
• What happens if weather, a road closure or a border change disrupts the route?
• Are the planned activities and locations covered under the specific insurance policy?
• How would assistance or evacuation be arranged from a remote stop?
• What is the cancellation or alternative-route process if travel advice changes?

Keep the plan usable offline

Save permits, accommodation and operator contacts securely, along with assistance numbers and an agreed contact plan with someone at home. Recheck entry rules for the next destination after a route change, since health documentation and transit conditions can depend on earlier stops.
