Thailand entry for Australians: exemption, TDAC and extensions
Eligible Australian visitors can use Thailand’s visa-exemption arrangements for appropriate short visits. Confirm the current allowance with the Thai authorities and follow the stay recorded on entry.
Travelling on a different passport? Entry rules change with nationality. The worked examples below use an Australian passport, but our free visa checker shows provider data where available — confirm your own requirements with the destination’s official authority before booking.
Review scope: 25 October 2026
TDAC guidance and official exemption information were reviewed. Official pages can retain different historical duration tables; no fixed exemption period is promised here. Confirm the current allowance for your trip.
Sources and what they coverCorrection — 16 October 2026
We removed an unverified personal testing story, the claim that no arrival paperwork is needed, speculative policy dates and guarantees about enforcement or processing. This page does not promise a fixed stay based on an older exemption table.
Check the current exemption for the actual visit
Use the Thai embassy’s guidance for your passport type, purpose and dates. A visa exemption, a tourist visa and the Destination Thailand Visa are different routes. Do not borrow the conditions of one to justify a visit under another.
Complete the arrival declaration separately
DFAT directs travellers to complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card on the Thai Immigration Bureau website within three days before arrival. Check the official service for your circumstances. The arrival card is not a visa or an extension of the permission granted at the border.
- Check passport validity and onward travel requirements against the official guidance.
- Save the TDAC acknowledgment and first accommodation details offline.
- After arrival, check the authorised departure date rather than counting from an old blog table.
- For work, study or a longer stay, establish the correct category before departure.
Handle a longer stay through immigration
Use the current extension guidance before permission expires. A short exit is not a guaranteed renewal. If a flight cancellation or other problem may take you beyond the permitted date, seek advice promptly and keep records of the changed itinerary.
Plan arrival without relying on instant clearance
Keep the transfer booking flexible enough for document checks and delays. Download the accommodation address and a backup transport route. Neither an online authorisation nor a prior successful visit guarantees the same queue, officer decision or entry conditions on the next trip.
If the recorded permission is shorter than the trip
Read the last authorised day on the entry or extension record. Do not substitute the visa’s final validity date or an older exemption table. Contact Thai Immigration before that stay expires to establish the available extension or other lawful process. If you are already beyond the date, seek official or appropriately qualified advice promptly rather than assuming that paying a fixed fine guarantees departure without other consequences.
Keep flight-cancellation records, medical evidence where relevant and any official instructions with the revised travel plan. A new airline ticket is not itself immigration permission. The old anecdotal overstay article has been consolidated here; it should not be used as evidence that another traveller will avoid detention or a re-entry restriction.
