Cambodia visa for Australians: e-Visa, arrival card and borders
Australians need a visa for Cambodia. The important planning distinction is between permission to visit, the separate arrival declaration, and an entry point that is actually open. An online approval cannot make a closed border usable.
Travelling on a different passport? Entry rules change with nationality. The worked examples below use an Australian passport, but our free visa checker shows provider data where available — confirm your own requirements with the destination’s official authority before booking.
Review scope: 25 October 2026
Tourist entry, passport validity, air-arrival declaration and the current border warning were checked against official guidance. This is research, not a report of personally crossing the border.

Smartraveller reports that Cambodia–Thailand land crossings remain closed and advises against travel within 50 km of that border in the listed provinces. Read the full current warning before choosing an overland route. Do not rely on an old bus timetable or a visa portal’s historical port list.
What does an Australian tourist need?
DFAT describes tourist e-Visas and visas on arrival for stays of 30 days, and requires at least six months of passport validity from arrival. That is a short-tourism starting point, not permission for employment or an indefinite stay. Check the category with Cambodian authorities if your activities or dates fall outside it. These are separate tasks:
| Task | What it does | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Tourist visa | Establishes the relevant immigration permission if granted | Does not replace an arrival declaration or guarantee admission |
| Cambodia e-Arrival | Collects the arrival, health and customs information required for air arrivals | Is not a visa |
| Route and border check | Establishes whether the planned entry is available | Is not settled by an old e-Visa port list |
| Accommodation registration | Ask the property to complete the required FPCS registration | Is not completed merely by paying for a room |
Apply online or use an arrival route deliberately
Begin at the official Cambodian e-Visa portal, linked below. Read the tourist product’s present fee, processing guidance and accepted entry points before applying. We are not quoting a current e-Visa fee or certifying its port list here because the application website restricted automated access during this review. The official application and arrival channels remain linked so you can inspect the terms yourself.
If choosing visa on arrival, confirm that your intended crossing offers that service for your passport and obtain its current document and payment instructions. Visa on arrival is a route to an application, not an approval already in your pocket. A traveller whose airline needs additional evidence should resolve that before departure. Paying an intermediary does not remove the authority’s decision or turn a receipt into an issued visa.
Complete the free e-Arrival separately
The Cambodian e-Arrival service says registration is free, is separate from a visa, and can be submitted within seven days before arrival. DFAT specifically requires it for air arrivals. Save or print the resulting QR code; the official FAQ says you can edit and resubmit before immigration processes you. Use the instructions for your actual mode of arrival rather than assuming that an airport form establishes land-border procedures.
- Use the passport and flight details you will actually present at check-in.
- Check the arrival airport against the ticket. A city name alone may not identify the right airport or terminal.
- Use an email account you can access overseas, and save confirmations outside the application browser tab.
- Keep the visa approval, arrival QR and accommodation details as separately named files. A screenshot of the wrong document is a common planning failure you can prevent at home.
A practical route comparison
Consider two hypothetical trips: one flies via Singapore to Siem Reap; the other intends to take a bus from Thailand into Cambodia. The first needs a flight-connection check, Cambodian entry permission and the air-arrival declaration. The second first needs a viable border: the closure reported at this review makes the proposed road crossing unsuitable. Buying the same tourist visa for both travellers does not make the two itineraries equivalent.
| Before buying | Air itinerary | Overland itinerary |
|---|---|---|
| Actual entry point | Airport shown on the operating airline’s ticket | Named border checkpoint and current opening status |
| Permission | Chosen visa route and the air-arrival declaration | Visa product accepted at that specific crossing |
| Connection risk | Through baggage, airside route and onward boarding pass | Border closure, onward operator and ability to change the route |
| Fallback | A later connection or arrival-night transfer | An alternative route that avoids an officially restricted area |
Keep the booking useful after arrival
Save the property address in a form you can show a driver, the host’s contact method and the agreed pickup arrangements. A pre-booked transfer should specify the real arrival airport and what happens if the flight changes. Compare the final price with luggage and any waiting conditions included rather than relying on a generic claim about the cheapest airport transport.
Keep the authorised departure date with your itinerary. If adding nights or changing the purpose of the visit, contact immigration before permission expires. An approval tied to one plan is not evidence that every later change is allowed. Keep any extension instructions with the revised flight rather than treating the new booking as an extension.
Before departure: a five-document check
- Passport with the required validity and acceptable condition.
- Visa approval or the confirmed on-arrival procedure for the actual entry point.
- e-Arrival confirmation where applicable.
- First accommodation address, transport arrangement and onward itinerary.
- Insurance and assistance details accessible without relying on mobile data.
Check the official advisory again close to travel and after a material route change. If the guidance conflicts with a saved article, resolve the conflict with the responsible authority and operating carrier. The aim is a workable trip, not simply a completed online form.
