Vietnam visa for Australians: e-Visa dates and entry points

Australian passport holders generally need a visa or a qualifying exemption certificate for Vietnam. The 45-day visa exemption described in earlier site content does not generally apply to Australian ordinary passports.

Travelling on a different passport? Entry rules change with nationality. The worked examples below use an Australian passport, but our free visa checker shows provider data where available — confirm your own requirements with the destination’s official authority before booking.

    Correction — 16 October 2026

We removed the incorrect 45-day Australian visa-free claim and unsupported assurances about automatic extensions, processing times and universal entry-point acceptance.

Choose the permission for the actual trip

The official e-Visa service provides permissions of up to 90 days, for single or multiple entry as approved. Check the validity dates, entry count and permitted entry points on the official portal. “Up to 90 days” is not a promise that every application receives the same dates.

    Check the application twice

    • Compare every name, passport number and date with your passport before submitting.
    • Use the intended arrival and departure details, including the correct entry point.
    • After approval, compare the issued document with the application and passport again.
    • Keep an offline copy and consider a printed copy for check-in and arrival.

    Build time for a correction

Do not build an itinerary around a guaranteed turnaround quoted by an agent or an older article. A missing name or incorrect date can matter even when an approval email has arrived. If the document contains an error, contact the issuing authority before travel rather than expecting airline staff to fix it at the gate.

Multiple entry is not a rolling renewal

A trip that leaves Vietnam and returns must fit both the approved entry count and validity period. Put both arrivals on the same calendar. Buying another flight does not extend the current permission. For a stay outside the approved dates, ask Vietnamese immigration about lawful options before the permission expires.

    Find the official application route

Open the immigration portal directly and follow its current instructions. Check the fee and accepted entry-point list there before paying. Keep the transaction record and application reference separate from promotional emails. If a commercial service assists you, make sure you understand its extra charge and that approval still comes from the Vietnamese authority.
