Self-transfer flights: calculate the real cost of separate tickets

Two cheap flights can create an expensive connection when nobody has agreed to protect the journey between them. Before choosing a self-transfer, work out what you must physically do at the airport and what you would pay if the first flight arrives late.

Find out what you are actually buying

Ask the seller whether the itinerary is issued as a protected connection or as separate tickets. A single payment screen, matching airline logos or a booking email containing both flights does not answer that question. If a travel agent offers its own connection guarantee, read who provides it, which delays it covers, how you contact them and whether you must pay first and claim later.

Heathrow explicitly distinguishes separate flights from connecting tickets: self-connecting travellers may need immigration, baggage collection, check-in and security again. It also says published minimum connection times do not apply to separately booked flights. Other airports have their own layouts and procedures, so check the airport and both operating airlines for your exact journey.

Draw the journey from aircraft door to next gate

    • Confirm the airport codes, terminals and travel date. An overnight flight can arrive on a different calendar day.
    • Ask whether your bag will be tagged to the final destination. If not, include baggage reclaim and the next bag-drop deadline.
    • Check whether you must enter the transit country, with the entry documents your passport needs for that route.
    • Establish whether online check-in is sufficient or an airline must inspect documents at a desk.
    • Add any terminal or airport transfer and check how it operates at the time you arrive.

Hand luggage removes one queue, but it does not prove that you can stay airside. The airport might lack the required transfer route, or the next airline might require a landside document check. Write down the actual process rather than assuming that no checked bag means no immigration.

Work backwards from the deadline that matters

The second flight’s departure time is the end of the process, not the time to reach check-in. Start with its published desk and gate closure times, then place the earlier tasks before them. Allow uncertainty for queues and disruption. If the plan only works when every stage takes its shortest possible time, the timetable is already telling you something useful.

    Planning lineQuestion to resolve
Entry and documentsCan I legally complete the landside journey if required?
Bag dropWhat is the operating airline’s exact deadline?
Ground transferWhat if the usual transfer is delayed or unavailable?
Late first flightWhich later flights are realistically available?
Financial fallbackCan I fund replacement travel and accommodation immediately?

    Compare the complete price

Here is a hypothetical budget in Australian dollars, not a fare quote. Suppose separate tickets save $220. Adding $45 for a transfer, $55 for a bag and $120 for an overnight room uses the entire saving. The separate itinerary can still be worthwhile for a stopover you want, but it should not win the comparison because those costs were left off the first screen.

Run a second scenario in which the first flight is cancelled and a replacement onward fare costs $650. Ask whether you would still choose the trip if you had to fund that fare. Insurance and seller guarantees differ: check the actual wording for separately booked connections, required connection intervals, exclusions and evidence. Do not treat a general “travel insurance included” label as an answer.

When an overnight stop is the better itinerary

An overnight stop creates time to recover from a delay and can turn an airport change into a useful visit. It also introduces accommodation, entry eligibility and local transport costs. Book the stop deliberately, with a place to stay and a route back to the airport, rather than relying on an assumption that a terminal remains open or provides somewhere suitable to sleep.

Before paying, keep a short decision note: ticket protection confirmed, baggage procedure confirmed, entry requirements checked, transfer route saved and disruption budget available. If any item is unresolved, ask the seller or operating airline while you can still choose another itinerary.
