Kenya entry for Australians: eTA and compulsory health insurance
Australian visitors ordinarily need Kenya’s electronic travel authorisation before travelling. “Visa-free” marketing does not mean arriving without preparation: the current process also includes compulsory inbound travel health insurance. Treat the authorisation, insurance and regional route as separate checks.
Travelling on a different passport? Entry rules change with nationality. The worked examples below use an Australian passport, but our free visa checker shows provider data where available — confirm your own requirements with the destination’s official authority before booking.
Review scope: 25 October 2026
The eTA process and the newly integrated inbound insurance requirement were checked against Kenya Immigration, eCitizen and DFAT. Conflicting insurance-exemption wording is flagged rather than resolved by assumption.
Sources and what they coverStart with the official eTA eligibility check
Kenya Immigration’s general-information page describes eTA as permission to travel, with admission decided at entry. Australia is not in its general nationality-exemption lists. The site recommends applying at least two weeks before travel even though its usual processing description is shorter. Use the official eligibility tool for the passport, purpose and status rather than a broad statement about all travellers.
| Prepare before applying | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Passport | The portal specifies at least six months validity and a blank page |
| Selfie or passport-style photograph | Use the portal’s actual format and image requirements |
| Contact details | Use an email account you can access during travel |
| Arrival, departure and accommodation | Make the application agree with the itinerary and first stay |
| Purpose-specific evidence | Host, business or other supporting documents can differ by visit |
Those details are application preparation, not a reason to disclose passport scans to an unknown agency. Start from the official eTA site and follow its links. Check the selected product and final payable amount before paying. A faster-service label should not become a promise from this article that a particular case will be approved immediately.
Keep application, payment and approval separate
The official eTA FAQ distinguishes an application acknowledgment, a payment receipt and the decision. It says travel is permitted after approval and directs approved applicants to save or print the PDF. Use its status tool with the reference number. If a document contains a mismatch or the decision is still pending, use the official support process before treating the trip as cleared.
- Compare the issued document with the actual travel passport.
- Keep the approval PDF outside the email inbox so it can be opened offline.
- Check whether changed dates, passport details or a new route require action.
- For a group, keep each person’s requirements and issued documents distinct. One person’s approval does not establish the rest of the group’s status.
Compulsory inbound health insurance is another task
Kenya’s official eCitizen insurance portal states that its inbound travel health policy is required for covered non-Kenyan short-stay visitors and is integrated into the eTA process. It says existing home-country travel insurance does not replace the statutory policy. DFAT’s current Kenya advice also identifies this requirement. Save the issued policy evidence separately from the eTA approval.
The portal lists exemptions and conditions, but some displayed categories and children’s wording are inconsistent across its sections. If you rely on an exemption, particularly for a child or unusual status, obtain a clear answer through the official service rather than assuming the broadest wording applies. This guide does not certify an exemption from contradictory text.
| Document | Question it answers | What to keep |
|---|---|---|
| eTA approval | May you travel under the authorisation granted? | Approval PDF and matching passport |
| Inbound insurance certificate | Have you met the applicable statutory insurance step? | Issued certificate and assistance instructions |
| Your wider travel policy | What cancellation, activity, medical or evacuation cover applies to the full trip? | Policy wording, disclosures and emergency-assistance details |
Nairobi transit and a Nairobi stopover are different
Kenya’s eTA general guidance exempts specified airport-transit passengers who remain within the airport precincts. A landside hotel, airport change, baggage collection or separate check-in can change the practical route. Ask the airline exactly how the connection works. Do not infer transit exemption merely because the destination on the final ticket is another country.
Hypothetical example: an Australian continues through Nairobi to a regional safari destination. If the onward boarding pass and baggage transfer allow the qualifying airside connection, examine the transit exception. If the booking instead requires collecting bags and spending the night in the city, work through ordinary Kenya entry and insurance requirements. Resolve this before selecting a non-refundable hotel or arranging a driver.
Build a regional safari as a border-by-border plan
| Itinerary event | Check before committing |
|---|---|
| Arrival in Kenya | Authorisation, insurance, passport and the actual permitted stay |
| Road crossing to Tanzania or another country | That country’s visa, accepted crossing and route-dependent health documentation |
| Return to Kenya | Whether the issued permission covers the return; obtain official confirmation for the full route |
| Departure via another country | Airside versus landside transfer and any new permission needed |
Do not describe an East African itinerary as one shared visa system without identifying the exact permission and its conditions. Re-entry rules are not settled by a tour operator’s convenient label. Send the complete route and dates to the responsible service and keep its reply with the bookings. A change from a road crossing to a flight can also change application details and health checks.
Check the safari contract as carefully as the flights
Ask which park or conservancy charges, transfers, accommodation, luggage restrictions and cancellation terms are included. For a small-aircraft segment, use the actual operator’s baggage conditions; an international airline’s allowance does not establish the onward allowance. Keep pickup instructions and the operator’s contact available offline so that an internet problem does not become a missed departure.
Read DFAT’s current regional warnings and discuss the full route and health needs with a clinician. Ask the insurer about the activities and locations in the booking. An eTA approval, a prepaid safari or a statutory insurance certificate does not establish that every activity is covered or every region is suitable for travel.
