Tanzania visa for Australians: mainland and Zanzibar entry checks
Australians need a visa for Tanzania. The national visa can cover a visit to both the mainland and Zanzibar, but the current insurance and health steps must be checked separately. A safari followed by a Zanzibar stay is not a single paperwork task.
Travelling on a different passport? Entry rules change with nationality. The worked examples below use an Australian passport, but our free visa checker shows provider data where available — confirm your own requirements with the destination’s official authority before booking.
Review scope: 25 October 2026
Tanzania Immigration’s visa guidance and DFAT’s current mainland/island insurance and health-form distinctions were checked. No claim is made that NIC and ZIC certificates are interchangeable or that an individual insurance claim will be covered.
Sources and what they coverUse the right tourist visa product
Tanzania Immigration’s official guidelines list Australia among countries eligible for online and on-arrival visas. For ordinary Australian tourist travel they describe an Ordinary Visa, with a US$50 fee and validity up to 90 days. The US-passport tourist rule is different. Use the category for your own passport and activity rather than copying a travel companion’s application.
The guidelines require six months passport validity and at least one unused visa page at application. They recommend the online route, require applicants using it to await approval before the journey, and say that a payment confirmation is not the final admission decision. Check the issued dates and any conditions on the grant rather than assuming the maximum is automatically your authorised stay.
One national visa can cover mainland and island visits
The same guidelines expressly say a visitor going to both mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar should select the first destination on the form and does not need another visa solely for visiting the other. A later exit to another country and return is a different question. Give immigration the complete sequence if the trip includes a regional side trip.
| Hypothetical route | Visa question | Other task to check |
|---|---|---|
| Fly to Kilimanjaro, safari, then Zanzibar | Correct national tourist permission for the whole visit | Mainland insurance, Zanzibar insurance and applicable health steps |
| Fly directly to Zanzibar | Select the actual first destination and visa category | Zanzibar policy and current arrival instructions |
| Kenya → Tanzania → Kenya | Each country’s entry and return permission | Crossing, insurance and route-dependent health evidence |
| A connection without entry | Whether the itinerary is genuinely airside transit | Baggage, boarding pass and any transit-specific conditions |
Mainland NIC and Zanzibar ZIC are distinct insurance checks
DFAT’s current Tanzania advice says inbound insurance from the National Insurance Corporation is required before arrival on the mainland. It separately identifies Zanzibar Insurance Corporation cover for travel to Zanzibar. The official channels linked below use different services. Do not assume one certificate is accepted for the other solely because the national visa covers both destinations.
For a combined trip, ask the official services to confirm what must be bought for the sequence and dates you intend. Save the reply and each issued certificate. This guide does not assert mutual recognition or a combined price. The compulsory policies have limits and do not settle cover for cancellation, every medical event or planned activities under a separate travel-insurance policy.
| Keep separate | Evidence to save |
|---|---|
| Visa application | Reference, selected category, payment and approval |
| Mainland insurance | NIC-issued evidence and applicable dates if required |
| Zanzibar insurance | ZIC-issued evidence and applicable dates if required |
| Wider travel insurance | Policy terms and assistance instructions for the whole itinerary |
| Health declaration | Current form submission or instructions applicable to the route |
Health documentation depends on the route as well as the passport
DFAT currently directs travellers to the Traveller’s Health Surveillance Form and identifies screening requirements. It also says a yellow-fever certificate is needed when arriving from a yellow-fever risk country. Put earlier destinations and transit stops in the clinical and border-document discussion; “I am Australian” does not answer where you have travelled. Use current official health guidance and a clinician rather than selecting vaccines or medication from this page.
An illustrative Australia–Kenya–Tanzania itinerary needs an assessment of the Kenya segment when checking Tanzanian documentation. A direct arrival from Australia is a different travel history. Do not copy an answer from a friend taking another route. Keep the advice and any required original certificate accessible with the passport, and recheck if flights change.
Apply using the actual arrival and departure plan
- Start at Tanzania Immigration and follow the official e-Visa link.
- Use the true first destination, passport, contact details and supporting documents.
- Retain the application identification number and use the official status checker.
- Compare the grant with the passport and booked dates before departure.
- If details change after submission, use the authority’s correction/support instructions rather than submitting contradictory records without advice.
Make the safari-and-island connection realistic
Write safari drop-off, the next flight or ferry, luggage handling and the Zanzibar transfer as separate steps. Ask the actual carrier about baggage and check-in; a smaller onward service may sell a different allowance from the international flight. Compare a single protected booking with separate tickets using their real conditions, not only the advertised travel time.
Add park or conservation charges, luggage costs, transfers, compulsory documents and cancellation terms to the quote comparison. An operator’s use of “all inclusive” should be translated into an itemised list. For the arrival night, save the accommodation address and meeting instructions independently of the main phone, especially where mobile connectivity may be interrupted.
Recheck before departure and after a route change
At this review, Tanzania’s official travel advice includes regional security warnings, possible transport disruption and health-screening updates. Read the current map and notices for the actual route. Avoid treating an approved visa or a paid tour as evidence that a specific road, border or activity is safe or operating.
- Permission and authorised dates match the full visit.
- Mainland and Zanzibar insurance requirements have each been resolved for the itinerary.
- Health form and any route-dependent certificate are ready.
- Operator, carrier and accommodation changes have a practical fallback.
- Assistance contacts and critical documents can be reached offline.
