South Africa visa requirements for Australians: entry and children
Australians visiting South Africa for tourism can generally stay for up to 90 days without a visa. Check the full entry conditions and the permission granted on arrival, especially on a return visit.
Travelling on a different passport? Entry rules change with nationality. The worked examples below use an Australian passport, but our free visa checker shows provider data where available — confirm your own requirements with the destination’s official authority before booking.
Review scope: 25 October 2026
Current DFAT guidance was checked for short tourism, accompanied-child documents and the warning that re-entry does not automatically renew the allowance.
Sources and what they coverCorrection — 16 October 2026
The earlier guide incorrectly imposed a blanket birth-certificate rule on foreign children and recommended a border bounce as a way to obtain another 90 days. Both claims have been removed.
Children: use the current rule for the actual family
DFAT says children travelling on a valid passport with one or both parents are no longer required to present the additional birth certificate, consent letter and supporting documents previously described here. Different family situations and travel without parents need their own official check. Ask the South African authorities about the exact arrangement rather than applying a blanket rule.
A side trip is not an automatic reset
DFAT explicitly warns that leaving and re-entering does not automatically give another 90 days. Put the whole itinerary, including neighbouring countries, on a single calendar. If you need more time, check the extension or other visa process before your permission expires.
- Check passport validity and blank-page requirements with South African authorities and the airline.
- Check the current customs declaration process for your route.
- Use a clinician and official guidance for any route-dependent health certificate.
- Keep onward travel and accommodation details accessible, including after a regional side trip.
Make regional trips separate document checks
A permission for South Africa does not establish entry eligibility for Botswana, Namibia, Mozambique or another destination. Give each crossing its own document check and confirm vehicle-hire permission and insurance before taking a rental across a border. Do not rely on the old neighbouring-country visa table from this guide.
A regional loop needs an entry plan for the return
| Traveller or route | Check |
|---|---|
| Child with one or both parents | Use current official accompanied-child instructions rather than an obsolete blanket birth-certificate list |
| Unaccompanied child or another arrangement | Obtain the specific documentary requirements before booking |
| South Africa and a neighbouring country | Separate national entry conditions and the actual return permission |
| Cross-border vehicle hire | Written permission, insurance and the company’s required documents |
Illustrative example: a traveller arrives in South Africa, visits Namibia and returns before flying home. Record all three border events. The return to South Africa is not evidence of an automatically renewed 90-day period. If a hire vehicle is involved, a border officer’s immigration permission does not establish the rental company’s consent or the scope of vehicle cover.
Before departure, compare the passport, onward dates and any required declaration with the itinerary. For a child or unusual family arrangement, ask about that exact case rather than using a checklist intended for another group. Keep the authority’s reply and the operator’s separate vehicle instructions accessible offline.
