USA entry for Australians: ESTA, fees and eligibility

Eligible Australian visitors can use the Visa Waiver Program for approved tourism or business visits of 90 days or less, with ESTA authorisation. The US$40.62 ESTA fee took effect on 16 October 2026 under CBP’s published adjustment.

Travelling on a different passport? Entry rules change with nationality. The worked examples below use an Australian passport, but our free visa checker shows provider data where available — confirm your own requirements with the destination’s official authority before booking.

VWP/ESTA distinctions and CBP’s published October 2026 fee adjustment were checked. The new US$40.62 fee replaces the obsolete amount; examples are planning advice.

    Sources and what they cover

    Fee correction — 25 October 2026

The earlier summary retained the US$40.27 ESTA fee. CBP’s published adjustment makes the fee US$40.62 from 16 October 2026. Check the official application before paying.

    Correction — 16 October 2026

The old page mixed US$21 and US$40 fees, made unverified claims about personal border experiences and misdescribed some business visits. Those claims have been removed.

ESTA is permission to travel under specific conditions

Approval is not a visa or a guarantee of admission. Check all eligibility questions on the official application, including travel history and any prior immigration issues. If your circumstances do not qualify, use the appropriate visa process rather than changing an answer to obtain an approval.

    Distinguish validity from permitted stay

CBP says an ESTA is generally valid for two years or until passport expiry, whichever is sooner. That does not permit a two-year visit. The Visa Waiver Program normally limits each eligible visit to 90 days or less. Short side trips do not provide a reliable method to restart that allowance.

    A departure checklist

    • Apply through the official CBP ESTA website and save the reference.
    • Check authorisation against the passport you will carry, especially after a renewal or name change.
    • Confirm the purpose of the trip fits the programme; local employment is a separate question.
    • Keep onward travel, accommodation and insurance contact details accessible offline.

Business travel needs an activity check

An eligible business meeting and taking a local job are different activities. Do not decide based on whether a laptop is packed. Describe the actual work, employer, payment arrangement and duration when asking the US embassy which permission is needed. Keep that clarification with your planning documents.

If the application or circumstances change

Read CBP’s instructions about when a new application is required. A new passport cannot simply inherit the authorisation tied to the old one. If refused, follow the official next steps; paying another website cannot guarantee that a refusal will be reversed.

Prepare for the actual purpose of the visit

A holiday, a business meeting and taking employment are different activities. If the work arrangement is unclear, describe the real employer, payer, activity and duration to the US authority before choosing a category. Do not infer the answer from carrying a laptop, an informal story about another traveller or a plan to be paid into an Australian account.

If an entry or boarding question arises

Give accurate answers, ask for clarification if needed and preserve the stated reason and any written instructions. An airline document review and a US admission decision are separate processes. For a legal issue or refusal, seek qualified advice; a general article and Australian consular assistance cannot overturn the US authority’s decision.

Put the domestic trip and budget beside the entry plan

    Budget lineUseful check

AccommodationTotal with mandatory charges and cancellation terms
Vehicle hireDriver eligibility, deposit, insurance and state-specific rules
PaymentsCurrency choice, card charges and an independent backup
AssistancePolicy scope and emergency contact available offline

Compare a focused city pair or regional drive with a long coast-to-coast itinerary using actual schedules and final quotes. No nationwide daily budget can establish the cost of your own dates. Leave flexibility before a separately booked international departure. If a booking changes the arrival, purpose or length of the US visit, repeat the permission check rather than treating it as only a transport decision.
