Sri Lanka ETA for Australians: free does not mean optional

Sri Lanka’s official notice makes tourist ETAs free for eligible Australian passport holders from 25 May 2026. It expressly retains the requirement to obtain an ETA before arrival.

The official ETA notice was checked for Australia, free tourist ETA, the 30-day/double-entry terms and the requirement to apply before arrival.

    Correction — 16 October 2026

The earlier guide incorrectly said no ETA or online form was needed, supplied an unsupported March 2027 end date and gave blanket medical advice. Free of charge does not mean no authorisation.

    What the current notice says

Australia is included in the official free-ETA scheme. The published terms provide a 30-day tourist permission with double entry during that period. Travellers wishing to remain longer must check the extension process and applicable fees with immigration. Read the current notice before every application, as eligibility and conditions may change.

    A practical application sequence

    • Open the official ETA website directly and read its current notices.
    • Use the passport that you will present to the airline and immigration.
    • Enter names, passport details and itinerary carefully; compare the completed request with the passport before submitting.
    • Save the application reference and approval for offline access. Check whether any follow-up action is required.

Plan the route around the permission you receive

Sketch the arrival day, departure day and any second entry on one calendar. A return flight later than the permission allows is a problem to resolve before departure. A hypothetical island-and-mainland holiday with an exit and re-entry needs its own date check; the word “double-entry” does not create an unlimited stay.

    If you need more time

Use the Department of Immigration and Emigration’s extension guidance before your permission expires. Do not rely on old fee tables, a promised automatic extension or a border trip as a substitute for permission. Ask the authority what applies to your passport and present status.

Keep health and arrival planning separate

An ETA approval does not answer medical, customs or transport questions. Consult a travel-health professional about your route and personal circumstances, and read the current official travel advisory. Store your first accommodation address and a backup arrival transport option alongside the ETA reference.
