Malaysia entry for Australians: MDAC and permitted stay

Check Malaysia’s current entry conditions for your passport and complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card when required. The official form specifies a three-day submission window including the submission date.

Travelling on a different passport? Entry rules change with nationality. The worked examples below use an Australian passport, but our free visa checker shows provider data where available — confirm your own requirements with the destination’s official authority before booking.

The official MDAC instructions and DFAT’s pass-record guidance were checked. Automated gates and Sabah/Sarawak travel still need their route-specific instructions.

    Sources and what they cover

    Correction — 16 October 2026

We removed unsupported extension fees, “unofficial” daily-money benchmarks, a misleading MM2H eligibility table and the claim that every foreign visitor has identical MDAC obligations.

Start with the official MDAC service

Read the current eligibility and exceptions on the immigration website, then use the linked registration form. Check the intended arrival date before submitting; a saved form from an earlier journey is not a substitute for the current trip’s declaration.

    Keep your entry record accessible

If you use an automated gate, follow the official instructions for viewing and saving the visit pass. DFAT notes that visitors may need to produce identification and evidence of their permission. Read the expiry date on that record rather than relying solely on an assumed stay length.

Do not treat all of Malaysia as one document step

If the itinerary includes Sabah or Sarawak, check the applicable state entry process and keep the passport accessible on domestic flights. A domestic booking confirmation does not itself answer an immigration question. Ask the relevant authority how a longer stay or a change of activity should be handled.

    • Check nationality, passport validity, visit purpose and onward plans together.
    • Save the declaration acknowledgment and visit permission offline.
    • For work, study or a second-home programme, use the current official category guidance.
    • Do not rely on an old programme threshold or an agent’s promised approval.

Handle changes before the permission expires

A cancelled flight, illness or longer itinerary needs a proper status check. Ask immigration about the lawful options and keep the response with the updated booking. Crossing a border is not a guaranteed extension strategy.

Keep the MDAC acknowledgment and visit pass separate

Sabah or Sarawak segmentPassport and applicable state-entry instructions

An illustrative itinerary arrives in Kuala Lumpur, continues to Sabah, then departs through another country. Make the passport accessible for the state-entry process instead of treating the whole domestic itinerary as a document-free transfer. Check the current instructions for that route with the relevant authority and carrier. The MDAC is not a work, study or residence approval.

If using an automated entry gate, follow the official email or portal instructions for viewing the visit pass after clearance. Save it where it can be produced without relying on a fresh mobile-data connection. A submitted arrival card is evidence of a form submission, not evidence of the exact stay eventually granted.
