Europe entry for Australians: Schengen, ETIAS and UK checks
A European itinerary can cross several immigration systems. Check Schengen short-stay time, UK permission and any non-Schengen destination separately rather than treating Europe as one visa area.
Travelling on a different passport? Entry rules change with nationality. The worked examples below use an Australian passport, but our free visa checker shows provider data where available — confirm your own requirements with the destination’s official authority before booking.
Review scope: 25 October 2026
The ordinary Schengen calculation, current ETIAS homepage, EES operation and UK ETA fee were checked. Non-Schengen visits and national residence permissions remain separate.
Sources and what they coverCorrection — 16 October 2026
The earlier guide mixed outdated fees, unverified border anecdotes and different European entry systems. This version separates the systems and uses official sources for the central rules.
Count Schengen visits together
Eligible Australians can normally make short visa-free visits of up to 90 days in any 180-day period under the applicable conditions. Entry and exit days count. Crossing from one Schengen country to another does not restart the allowance. Use the official calculator with earlier visits as well as the proposed itinerary.
Separate EES from ETIAS
EES records eligible border crossings; it is not a visa application. The official EU guidance says its full operation began on 10 April 2026 after the phased rollout. ETIAS is a separate planned travel authorisation and is not accepting applications at the time of this review. Recheck the official site for the status that applies when you travel.
UK and other destinations
The UK has a separate entry system. GOV.UK lists the ETA fee as £20 and describes eligibility and exemptions. Ireland and destinations outside Schengen need their own checks. A UK visit does not itself reset a rolling Schengen allowance.
- List every border crossing and earlier Schengen visit on one calendar.
- Check the passport issue-date and validity requirements for the destination.
- Confirm the correct permission for work, study or a stay beyond ordinary visitor limits.
- Keep onward travel, accommodation and any authorisation accessible offline.
Long-stay national permissions do not cover everything
A national residence or long-stay permission should be read for the country and activity it authorises. Do not assume it creates unrestricted residence or work rights in every other European country. Resolve any plan that combines long stays and repeated short visits with the responsible authorities before booking.
Malta, Cyprus and an itinerary outside Schengen
Malta is part of Schengen, so ordinary short visits use the same rolling allowance as visits to other member countries. Cyprus is currently outside Schengen. That distinction does not establish Cyprus entry permission or every EU authorisation system’s geographic scope. Check the Republic of Cyprus authorities for the passport, entry port and purpose, particularly before a Green Line crossing or a vehicle arrangement across different areas.
| Illustrative stop | Planning treatment |
|---|---|
| France, Italy and Malta | One ordinary Schengen short-stay calculation across the area |
| United Kingdom | Separate permission and entry rules; check ETA eligibility |
| Cyprus | Separate national entry check and transport route |
| Türkiye | Use the nationality-specific MFA rules; do not buy an e-Visa by habit |
For each transport leg, record whether it crosses an external border and whether baggage collection or a separate ticket creates another immigration step. Include reservations, luggage, local accommodation charges and the ability to change bookings in the price comparison. A cheap flight between two European cities does not make them part of one permission system.
