China visa requirements for Australians: 30-day exemption
The Chinese embassy’s published notice extends eligible Australian ordinary-passport visits of up to 30 days through 31 December 2026. A longer trip or a different purpose needs a separate eligibility check.
Travelling on a different passport? Entry rules change with nationality. The worked examples below use an Australian passport, but our free visa checker shows provider data where available — confirm your own requirements with the destination’s official authority before booking.
Review scope: 25 October 2026
The embassy notice was checked for eligible purposes, the 30-day limit and its published 31 December 2026 expiry. Later travel needs a new policy check.
Sources and what they coverCorrection — 16 October 2026
The previous guide incorrectly stated an extension through 2027 and gave unsupported airport counts and financial benchmarks. Those claims have been removed.
Which visits the embassy notice covers
The notice covers eligible short visits for business, tourism, family visits, exchanges and transit. It does not turn every activity into a permitted tourist activity. Check the purpose, passport type and dates against the embassy guidance before deciding that no visa application is needed.
Separate the mainland from Hong Kong and Macao
Build your itinerary as separate border crossings. A flight into Hong Kong followed by a train into mainland China creates a different entry sequence from a direct flight to Shanghai. Keep each segment in your document checklist and use the relevant immigration authority for each jurisdiction. Do not assume that one permission covers the whole route.
Prepare an itinerary you can explain
- Write down the intended arrival and departure dates for each mainland visit.
- Keep the first accommodation address and onward transport details accessible offline.
- If staying with a host, check local accommodation registration obligations before arrival.
- For a trip after the published policy expiry, check for a new notice rather than assuming an extension.
Visa-free entry and transit schemes are different
Do not combine the conditions of a unilateral visa exemption with those of a transit-without-visa scheme. If you rely on transit permission, check its route, port and onward-destination conditions separately. An itinerary that returns to its starting country can raise different questions from one continuing to a third destination.
Resolve longer-stay questions before paying
For study, employment or a stay outside the published exemption, ask the Chinese embassy or visa application service which category is appropriate. Keep the answer and the exact itinerary together. Changing a flight is often easier before a non-refundable booking is made.
