Working holiday applications: a document and eligibility checklist
Working-holiday and youth-mobility schemes have country-specific passport, age, participation and work conditions. Check the official programme before relying on a general list of destinations.
Correction — 16 October 2026
The earlier article supplied inconsistent fees and implied that a broad age range or a country agreement established individual eligibility. Those claims have been removed.
Check eligibility before planning a job
- Confirm nationality, passport and residence requirements.
- Check the age rule at the stage that matters: application, invitation or entry.
- Check previous participation, quotas or invitation requirements.
- Confirm financial evidence, insurance and supporting documents.
Apply through the correct programme
Use the UK Youth Mobility Scheme, Canada’s International Experience Canada, or the relevant national working-holiday guidance. A visitor authorisation such as an eTA or ETA is a different product and does not establish work permission.
Keep dates and conditions together
Record the application deadline, any invitation window, entry deadline and the permission’s duration separately. Read restrictions on employers, activities and study. A job offer or an airline ticket cannot extend a permission that expires earlier.
Budget beyond the application
Collect current application and insurance charges, initial accommodation, deposits and an emergency return plan. Use actual job and housing offers rather than a promised wage or a claim that a particular year abroad will pay for itself.
Before departure
Save the approval, entry instructions and insurance evidence offline. Check whether a work permit or other document must be issued on arrival and inspect it before leaving the relevant desk. If a condition is wrong or unclear, ask promptly rather than treating it as a detail to fix after starting work.
Compare the year you can actually afford
| Comparison column | What to put in it |
|---|---|
| Permission | Official programme, eligibility stage, entry deadline and allowed work |
| Before first pay | Flight, application, insurance, initial accommodation and deposit |
| Ordinary month | Rent, transport, food, deductions and realistic hours |
| A difficult month | Lower hours or no work, replacement accommodation and a return option |
| Non-financial purpose | Language learning, experience, region and the activities you want |
Use actual written job and housing offers for the final comparison. If accommodation is tied to employment, ask when you must leave after the job ends and whether a deposit is refundable. A higher advertised hourly wage can be less useful than reliable hours and a housing arrangement you understand. No calculation here is evidence that a particular employer will hire you.
Keep the UK Youth Mobility, Canada IEC and Japanese working-holiday rules separate in the worksheet. The existence of a programme does not establish your age, participation or invitation eligibility. A visitor ETA or eTA is not the permission to start that work.
