Planning South America from Australia: check the route country by country

A multi-country South American trip needs separate entry, transport and health checks for each segment. Do not treat the continent as one visa-free area or use an old regional table to decide eligibility.

    Correction — 16 October 2026

The previous guide incorrectly said Brazil no longer required an Australian visa and gave unsupported stay limits, safety assurances and current prices. Those claims have been removed.

Brazil and Chile illustrate why a regional shortcut fails

DFAT’s current Brazil guidance says Australians need to arrange a visa before arrival. Its Chile guidance says Australians no longer need a visa for stays up to 90 days. These are distinct national rules, not evidence that the same permission covers another country or every purpose of travel.

Build the entry sequence before the sightseeing list

    • List all arrival, exit and transit points, including a flight change outside the region.
    • Check each person’s passport and purpose against the relevant authority.
    • Keep onward travel and accommodation evidence available offline.
    • Check any cross-border tour, rental vehicle or cruise arrangement separately.

Choose a route that leaves recovery time

A hypothetical itinerary combining a major arrival city, a high-altitude destination and a remote excursion needs more planning than a sequence of flight durations. Account for transfers, disrupted connections and access to care. Ask a clinician about your own health and route rather than using a generic medication list from a blog.

    Compare actual booking costs

Price the intended dates and include baggage, ground transport, park or excursion tickets and changes. A cheap flight can be less useful than a later service that connects reliably with the next part of the trip. Keep separate tickets and their protection conditions visible in the comparison.

    Keep safety decisions specific

Read official advice for the actual regions and transport routes, not just a country headline. Keep flexibility for closures and local instructions. An entry approval or a famous attraction’s popularity is not a guarantee that every route to it is safe or covered by insurance.
