South Korea: check K-ETA exemption before applying
The official K-ETA notice extends the existing temporary exemption through 31 December 2026. Check eligibility for your passport and travel date before paying for an application.
Correction — 16 October 2026
The old article simultaneously said no pre-approval was needed and that every Australian had to obtain K-ETA. It also gave unsupported customs allowances and fixed medical or passport requirements.
Read the official exemption notice first
The ministry says the extension applies to countries and regions already covered by the temporary exemption. The application process identifies eligible passports. An exempt traveller may choose to apply for K-ETA for its stated benefits, but that is different from a universal requirement and can incur a non-refundable fee.
Check the separate arrival-card task
K-ETA, visa exemption and an arrival declaration are different concepts. Use the official guidance to determine which applies to your circumstances. Do not assume that the absence of a K-ETA application removes every other arrival requirement.
- Check the rules using the passport you will present for travel.
- Confirm that the visit purpose and duration qualify for the intended permission.
- For travel after 2026, look for a new official notice before relying on this temporary exemption.
- Use customs guidance for duty-free allowances and declarations rather than an old travel checklist.
Keep the arrival plan independent of live data
Save the first accommodation address, transfer instructions and any approval or declaration reference offline. If you will rely on a local map or payment app, install and check it before departure. Keep a way to reach your accommodation if a mobile-data setup fails.
Work and longer stays
Tourist entry is not a substitute for a working-holiday, employment or study permission. Ask the Korean consulate about the actual activity and eligibility, and use the relevant official application process. Avoid building a work plan around an old age-limit, quota or fee quoted on a travel blog.
