European night trains: choose the berth before comparing the fare

An overnight train can replace a hotel night and move a long journey out of your sightseeing hours. Whether it is a good deal depends on the sleeping space, the arrival time and what you need to do the next morning. Compare the journey you will actually take, not just a headline seat fare.

A seat, a couchette and a sleeper are different products

Nightjet distinguishes seated accommodation, couchettes, mini cabins and sleeping cars. Its couchette offering includes shared compartments, while sleeper layouts and facilities depend on the carriage category. Do not assume an attractive photo of a private bathroom represents every cabin on that departure. Open the accommodation description attached to your exact train and date before comparing prices.

    What to compareWhy it matters
Seat or lying-down berthA low seat fare may not provide the rest you need for a full day after arrival.
Shared or privateBooking one berth does not necessarily book the whole compartment.
Upper or lower berthClimbing, headroom and night-time access may affect suitability.
Bathroom facilitiesShared facilities and a private bathroom are different categories.
Carriage typePhotos, sockets and storage can differ between older and newer stock.

For a family, write down whether the booking reserves the whole space and which ages count under that offer. For a solo traveller, decide how comfortable you are sharing. If you have mobility requirements, ask the operator about the specific accessible accommodation, boarding assistance and bathroom arrangement rather than relying on a generic “accessible train” label.

A rail pass is not the berth reservation

The official Interrail night-train guidance explains that reservations are needed for night trains and that accommodation choices affect the extra cost. Check the rules for your own pass and service. Work out whether you need a passholder reservation or a standalone ticket that already includes travel and accommodation; buying both without checking can duplicate part of the payment.

    Compare the complete overnight budget

Use this hypothetical example, with invented Australian-dollar amounts for arithmetic rather than current fares. A daytime train at $90 plus a $150 hotel totals $240. A night berth at $210 looks $30 cheaper. If the early arrival requires $25 in luggage storage and an extra $20 breakfast, the saving disappears. The night train may still be the better use of time, but that is a different benefit from a lower cash cost.

    • Price the actual berth and occupancy you want, not the cheapest seat shown.
    • Add reservation fees, station transfers and any meals you would otherwise have included.
    • Ask the next accommodation about luggage storage and check-in time.
    • Consider whether arrival after poor sleep would waste a prepaid tour or require a quiet recovery morning.

Pack for the compartment, not the hotel room

Make a small night bag containing your ticket, essential medication, toiletries, earplugs, an eye mask and what you need on waking. Arrange the main bag before boarding so you do not need to unpack it beside sleeping passengers. Keep documents and valuables under your control. Check the operator’s storage arrangements against your bag size: space for a suitcase is not the same as a dedicated locked compartment for it.

Charging sockets and Wi-Fi should be useful extras rather than the only way to reach your next booking. Save tickets and arrival instructions offline. Keep clothing and footwear accessible, especially if your berth requires climbing. For unusual luggage, bicycles or pets, confirm the booking conditions before you buy the passenger fare.

    Protect the following morning

Leave room for delay before a separate flight, timed museum entry or tour. If you connect to another train, establish how that connection is ticketed and what assistance is available if the overnight service runs late. A plan that ends at “arrive at 07:00” is incomplete until you know where you can have breakfast, leave bags and wait for check-in.

Recheck the operator’s timetable and service messages shortly before departure, especially during engineering work. Save the actual boarding station and stop name, since a city can have several major stations. The strongest night-train itinerary gives you a comfortable enough berth and a forgiving arrival day, even if it is not the lowest advertised fare.
